Today, EFF published "Privacy Without Monopoly: Data Protection and Interoperability," a major new paper by Bennett Cyphers and me.

It's a paper that tries to resolve the tension between demanding that tech platforms gather, retain and mine less of our data, and the demand that platforms allow alternatives (nonprofits, co-ops, tinkerers, startups) to connect with their services.

is there any lightweight, hackable (python, nodejs, or rust) fediverse server? like just using sqlite and the filesystem, for running very small instances?
(trying to talk myself out of writing one, like i need any more side projects...)

Aaron Epstein is a 90 year old who lives a couple miles from me in North Hollywood. He's been an AT&T customer since 1960 and holy shit, is he ever *done with their shit*.
Epstein gets 3mbps (nominal)/1.5 mbps (actual) from AT&T, in the heart of the entertainment industry's company town, where the studios are serviced by a 100gb fiber loop built at public expense (it passes under my house's foundation slab).

In case you haven't seen my announcement on birdsite, I'm unofficially rebranding #Fediverse as the Social Cloud. This term is a bit more relatable and isn't a word that sounds like technobabble to outsiders.
I also envision this to be a counterpoint to the proposed #bluesky, which needs to enable access to Social Clouds or else we'll end up with a sunburn.

I'm still absolutely cynical about the Twitter Bluesky project. While not to discount the efforts of individual contributors, I just do not trust Twitter, Inc, to be capable of doing the right thing.
