2021 Year of the Self-organizing Interoperable Social Cloud

Today, EFF published "Privacy Without Monopoly: Data Protection and Interoperability," a major new paper by Bennett Cyphers and me.

It's a paper that tries to resolve the tension between demanding that tech platforms gather, retain and mine less of our data, and the demand that platforms allow alternatives (nonprofits, co-ops, tinkerers, startups) to connect with their services.

#FollowFriday / #FF recap of this week's recommended follows:

is there any lightweight, hackable (python, nodejs, or rust) fediverse server? like just using sqlite and the filesystem, for running very small instances?

(trying to talk myself out of writing one, like i need any more side projects...)

For a preview of what we're dealing with if you happen to be unfamiliar with the type of company these folks are running:

"Can I send an invite via e-mail address?
Unfortunately, we don't have an e-mail invite option yet. You'll need to have the mobile phone number of the person you want to invite saved in your phone contact book. "

Aaron Epstein is a 90 year old who lives a couple miles from me in North Hollywood. He's been an AT&T customer since 1960 and holy shit, is he ever *done with their shit*.

Epstein gets 3mbps (nominal)/1.5 mbps (actual) from AT&T, in the heart of the entertainment industry's company town, where the studios are serviced by a 100gb fiber loop built at public expense (it passes under my house's foundation slab).

Initial impressions: I think I'll be ripping this out and moving to Dendrite or another homeserver soon.

finally managing to check out the Matrix ecosystem after setting up my own matrix-synapse server

Good morning Social Cloud! If you're part of a group in the public interest and you've had issues with censorship or abusive moderation on platforms such as Twitter, etc, reach out to me.

Thanks to a generous AWS grant I'd be happy to help you host your presence on the Social Cloud -- aka the Fediverse. I'll run your choice of services and act as your technical partner.

just another day posting onto this Social Cloud.

In case you haven't seen my announcement on birdsite, I'm unofficially rebranding as the Social Cloud. This term is a bit more relatable and isn't a word that sounds like technobabble to outsiders.

I also envision this to be a counterpoint to the proposed , which needs to enable access to Social Clouds or else we'll end up with a sunburn.

another FUD piece hitting the top of HN today. yikes

I'm still absolutely cynical about the Twitter Bluesky project. While not to discount the efforts of individual contributors, I just do not trust Twitter, Inc, to be capable of doing the right thing.

Remember Embrace, Extend, Extinguish?

semi-regular reminder that bluesky is vaporware. Real Artists Ship:

Fair note: the ActivityPub community largely reject fascists and this will not be a place of refuge.

I'm just thinking about this blog post I wrote in 2018. Because even when Twitter makes a good decision, the first sentence comes to mind: Why does the entire world have to wait on the CEO of one US company to make a decision?
